Higher Education in an Era of Digital Competition: Choices and Challenges

Higher Education in an Era of Digital Competition:  Choices and Challenges
by Donald E. Hanna and Associates

"This book is being published at the dawn of a new millennium. The symbolic passage from one era to another invites speculation about the future and reflection about the past and its meaning for the future. Higher Education in an Era of Digital Competition: Choices and Challenges focuses upon critical knowledge and perspectives that will guide us in building a new system of higher education." — from the Preface

Online learning/teaching is one of the most discussed topics in higher education these days. From the proliferation of courses offered by traditional universities, to for-profit institutions, to online study in private business, to a special section of the Chronicle of Higher Education devoted to distance learning, educators find themselves inundated with information and with choices and challenges.

This is not a book about the technology and the amazing possibilities for its use. Instead the authors write from the assumption that the technology can be a positive shaping force and a valuable asset for providing quality education for lifelong learners. They provide a framework for using the technology for positive change. Don Hanna states: " The authors’ goal is to assist the reader in developing a more complete understanding of how teaching and learning, knowledge generation and preservation, organizational design and evaluation, and leadership can all function together within a changing and increasingly competitive external environment to produce a new responsiveness and diversity within higher education."

This is a book about the use of technology and the choices and challenges that educators and administrators make concerning the use of the technology.
